The Most Important Decision

The MOST Important Decision Ever Made

By Coach Frank Sagasta

I made a conscious decision in my middle 30’s to refrain from any important decisions on my down-cycles.  The thoughts of suicide was a common thought during these times more so during my teen years, but I couldn't act on it, because killing myself would have been an important decision.

Wait a minute…did I just say,

"Killing myself would have been an important decision?"  In fact, to a rational person that would’ve be a STUPID decision.  Why?  Because I would’ve hart those I actually love and those that love me too!!

Mindset is truly important.  I think more schools should teach/train kids more on it.  Understanding, our human emotion and thought process is essential for future successes and failures.  It helps with the building blocks of resilience, adaptability, confidence, and emotional intelligence.  A person without these tools might be part of the circle of those dealing with depression because they're overwhelmed with seemingly insurmountable problems.  The one thing that's kept me grounded to reality when I am thinking irrationally has been the predetermined outcome I've ingrained or calluses in my brain over the plus decade.

DON'T MAKE ANY IMPORTANT DECISIONS WHEN I'M IN A DOWNCYCLE!!  DON’T MAKE ANY IMPORTANT DECISION BASED OFF EMOTION OR FEELINGS.  DON’T MAKE IMPORTANT DECISIONS FROM OUTSIDE VOICES THAT AREN’T WHERE YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE IN LIFE.

It acts like a subroutine that runs every time I'm faced with an important decision. That predetermined outcome subroutin has never failed me, and I'm certain it will continue to serve me well for the rest of my life, regardless of how irrational my thoughts become on my down-cycle moments.  I know the sun will set and the sunshine will always return to bring new opportunities.  Once I realized that walking away is a much better option than killing myself, suicide ceased to be an option.  Fortunately, there have only been a couple problems in my life that became tempting enough but because of the nature of training my mind.  Those things are far behind me.

So, what helped in my situation?

I found a mentor.  He helped me understand one major thing.  In order for life to change, you have to change!  And that starts by changing your attitude, and habits.  Having a positive attitude or better mindset is truly helpful for people.  Because as I said, it fosters resilience and reduces suicidal ideation by increasing positive affect, which broadens thinking and builds personal resources like problem-solving skills and self-awareness.  Positive thinking helps individuals manage stress better, improve health outcomes, and lower depression and anxiety levels by encouraging optimism and proactive coping rather than denial of problems.  It also acts as a protective factor by enhancing hope (Hearing Other Peoples Experiences) and reducing feelings of learnedhopelessness that can lead to suicidal thoughts.

Clinically, deliberately inducing positive emotions during therapy can improve treatment outcomes for suicidal patients, as positive affect specifically helps people bounce back from adversity.  I have been practicing gratitude from 15 years along with setting positive goals, managing negative thoughts, exercising, and surrounding myself with supportive people are practical ways to cultivate a positive mindset that buffers stress and boosts mood.  Some people like positive affirmations.  I choose an important decision of changing my self-talk which improved self-esteem, confidence, self-worth, combat depressive symptoms, and helped regain motivation, which is crucial since depression often involves harsh self-criticism and negative thoughts.  I am not perfect and what I used won’t change everyone.  I know they worked for me as well as others on my journey.

I hope there was something that I aligned for someone today.  Always remember to: Speak positive words into your life every single morning.  Think big.  Think healing.  Think success.  Think peace.  Think happiness.  Think growth mindset. Always start the day with positive energy and go for a short walk without overthinking.  Listen to life around you.  You deserve it.

Respectfully,

Coach Frank Sagasta
