Adventures Await:

A Summer Program That Changes Lives

By Coach Frank Sagasta

Summer can be a time for family vacations.  Summer can be a time to spend with friends because families are busy working.  Summer might just mean long days at home.  Summer can be a time for kids to jump into a world filled with full of adventure, discovery, memories, new experiences, and new friendships.  Especially, those of Desert Star Academy in Fort Mohave, Arizona.  That’s where two dedicated teachers, Coach Frank Sagasta and Coach Ashley Osborn, step in to make a difference for kids within their school and community.

For the past seven years, Mr. Sagasta and, for four years, Mrs. Osborn have been running a vibrant summer program designed especially for middle school-aged kids in the community.  What started as a small initiative to keep scholars/students engaged during the break has blossomed into a beloved tradition that dozens of kids look forward to every year.  Their vision is simple: every child deserves a summer filled with adventure, friendship, and new experiences.  During these special summers, scholars/students get the chance to explore the great outdoors—camping under the stars, hiking scenic trails, kayaking upon the lake, watching new movies, bowling, community scavenger hunts, and embarking on fun-filled trips that create lasting memories.  The program is designed to connect kids with nature, community, build confidence, and foster teamwork through hands-on adventures.  In addition, it was designed to get kids outdoors, moving, and discovering the world beyond the classroom.

The benefits of this program go far beyond just having fun.  For many of our scholars/students, it’s a chance to overcome their fear and jump out of their comfort zone, make new friends, and develop a sense of belonging.  Being outdoors and embarking upon new activities has assisted kids in overcoming fears and discovering strengths they never knew they had.  The supportive environment created by our teachers has allowed scholars/students to take risks, learn from mistakes, and celebrate successes, big and small.  Through their unwavering dedication, these two teachers have made summers meaningful for countless scholars/students.  They prove that when educators/coaches invest their time and passion, they can change lives, one adventure at a time.  Even they, too, have learned certain virtues that have stemmed into something special.

Why This Program Matters:

For many kids, this summer program is a highlight of their year.  It’s a chance to try new things, make new friends, and build skills that will last a lifetime.  Mrs. Osborn and Mr. Sagasta are passionate about creating a safe, inclusive space where every child feels welcome, valued, and special.  Mr. Sagasta adds, “We want every kid to know that they matter and that summer should be about fun, but also about growing and exploring who you are.”  Mr. Sagasta continues to add, “Seeing the kids light up when they try something new—that’s what keeps us going.  It’s super rewarding for us as teachers.”  This idea of a school-wide summer program came to Mr. Sagasta and Ms. Plasmen seven years ago.  They envisioned a summer program where middle schoolers could be inspired by a desire to provide enriching experiences that go beyond the traditional classroom, especially for scholars/students who might otherwise lack access to such opportunities.  Mr. Sagasta is a great example of a scholar.  He knew that research highlights that summer programs can combat learning loss, foster social and emotional growth, and help students across the nation develop new interests and skills for a lifetime.

Today, Mrs. Osborn and Coach Sagasta often see summer as a unique chance to create a positive, engaging environment where kids can explore, make friends, build confidence, and build teamwork, away from the pressures of school and home.

So, where does the motivation and inspiration likely stem from for teachers like Ashley and Frank?  Mr. Sagasta says it's a combination of wanting to prevent summer weeds from growing, learning loss, provide enriching experiences, and foster a sense of belonging and excitement for learning and experiences among middle schoolers in their community.  As the program continues to grow, Mrs. Osborn and Mr. Sagasta are always looking for new ways to inspire and engage their scholars/students.  Whether it’s adding more field trips or inviting guest speakers from the community, they’re committed to making each summer better than the last.  If you know a middle schooler looking for adventure, encourage them to join Mrs. Osborn and Mr. Sagasta’s summer program at Desert Star Academy.  It is called ‘Desert Star Adventures’, it’s more than just a way to pass the time—it’s an opportunity to create memories that will last a lifetime.

Lastly...

I would like to especially thank the hard work and dedication of each of my colleagues, Carly Plasman, Wendy Cruz, Sarah Sagasta, and Ashley Osborn.  Without you, all these memories wouldn't have been possible.  Of course, thank you to ALL our parents/guardians and their participating scholars/students.

Respectfully,

Coach Frank Sagasta
